Day 10: How to Register Your Domain Name

You might have heard the popular saying:

You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

This statement applies to the internet as well.  The first thing your prospective customer notices about you is your domain.  So take time to choose the right domain name if you want to make a good first impression.

You could face a problem if the domain name you’d like to purchase has already been registered to someone else.  In that case, Domainbot – the tool I mentioned on Day 8 is a good place to look for alternative names.

Three Benefits of Registering Your Own Domain Name

  • It gives you more authority and credibility from your audience – especially if you are selling products.
  • It gives you a competitive advantage – sets you apart from others in your niche.
  • It gives you better branding and more recognition.

A Step-by-Step Process to Register Your Domain Name

In order to make it easy for you to follow through, I have created a step-by-step tutorial with relevant screenshots.  Please note that these steps will vary a little from one domain registrar to another.  I have used the GoDaddy India website for the explanation below.

Side Note: I found an India specific GoDaddy offer – purchase a domain name for Rs. 109 (about 1.81 USD + ICANN fees).

Step 1:

Visit the domain registrar – if possible go to the offer page directly from one of the ads.  If you cannot find a direct offer, search online for a coupon code that you can use towards the end of the registration process.

Step 2:

Enter your chosen domain name in the corresponding field and hit ‘Search’.  In this instance, I have used my own name.  I’ve wanted to register my name as a domain for quite some time.  So I am doing it now… and using that as a guide for this tutorial.

Enter your Chosen Name

Step 3:

If your domain is available, click the ‘ADD’ button.  If it is not, search for another domain name.  You might notice various offers on this page and also in the coming pages.  I usually ignore them as they aren’t really necessary.  The offer will be automatically reflected in your cart towards the end of the registration process.

Click the add button if the domain is available

Step 4:

When you click ‘Add’, your order summary will be updated.  Then click ‘Continue to Checkout’.

Step 5:

You will be presented with a page or pop-up with a few other offers which you can ignore.  {I don’t recommend GoDaddy’s web hosting at all.  I have seen many complaints about their hosting.}  Click the ‘Continue’ button towards the bottom of the page without checking any of the options.

Ignore other offers

Step 6:

You will then be taken to your cart to review your order.  The first thing you notice here (I do !) is that the price is not what was mentioned in the offer.  Well, the thing is… the offer price is for the first year only and they have automatically set the registration period to be 2 years.  So the price will definitely be high!  What you need to do is, manually set the time of registration to one year.  The cart will then automatically update to reflect your change.

Step 7:

Now that the offer price for one year is reflected in your summary, you can click the ‘Checkout’ Button.  If you hadn’t started directly from an offer page, this is when you have to add your promo code.  You can see the option to apply a promo code towards the bottom of the page.  Click that option and add the code in the space provided.  Once you click ‘Apply’, your total will reflect the promo code discount.  Please keep in mind that some promo codes expire very fast.

Step 8:

If you have a account, log in with your credentials.  Otherwise create an account.

Step 9:

After you log in, you will be presented with the payment options.  As my details are already saved here, they are automatically populated in the respective fields.  New members will have to supply their address, billing address (the address in the credit card statement) and credit card details.  {Note: For some offers, users are not allowed to use PayPal for payment.}  When your details are filled in, click ‘Place your Order’.

Enter your address and Payment details

Step 10:

Type the Access code shown in the box provided and click ‘Verify Code’.

Enter Access code shown

Step 11:

Voila!  You are done!  Your domain has been registered successfully.

As you can see, there is really not much to registering your domain name.  It is a pretty straightforward process.  I hope this tutorial has demystified it for you and given you the confidence to get started on your own.
